facebook status - Tredalo - Human Powered Hamster Wheel

Chris Todd, aged 35, is all set to cross the 66 miles across open water in Irish Sea for two days non-stop within a self-build human hamster wheel called Tredalo, hand-crafted in his own garden with help from his wife and friends (James Mahoney and Thomas Mahoney). The idea for such a herculean feat struck him while he was rowing across a lake and thereafter he started making Tredalo which took him almost 11 months to complete with plans to cross the English Channel which were curtailed due to high costs involved. Chris has hopes of raising around £20,000 for two charities, Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Wiltshire Blind Association through this enduring 48 hour journey that he will embark on by propelling the hamster forward by walking on the wire mesh.

This human powered hamster will have rudders on each side for extra stability under rough conditions. All the food, drinks and maps will be included in the craft so that Chris has requisite supplies for two days and he doesn’t get lost in the seamless waters. According to estimation Chris will burn around 36,000 calories and consume 30 liters of water to keep his body in top running condition for two days, which by the way is equivalent to running 10 back to back marathons. Tredalo has been tested for couple of hours on lakes and in the sea, so Chris is hoping to see this amazing adventure through without any major setbacks.

facebook status - First Russian Submarine

The first submarine appeared in Russia in the times of Peter the Great, in 1721. It used to be called “a hidden vessel”. The submarine was tested in presence of the emperor himself not far from St. Petersburg. It was the place where appeared a new city – Sestroretsk which is a big resort today. Until recently nothing had reminded of the first Russian submarine tests. But everything has changed.

This is the boat from inside. The crew consisted of four to eight people.

Here you can see a periscope prototype.

This thing was always on the surface of water to intake air for breathing.

Paddles were used to move the boat under water.

facebook status - Unusual Sculptures That Appears in Public

On the pavements of Wroclaw, Poland, at the intersection of Piłsudskiego and Świdnicka streets, Polish artist Jerzy Kalina installed a total of 14 life-like statues—seven people descending into the ground on one end of the junction and seven people emerging from the ground on the adjacent corner.

The public art installation called Przejście, translated as Passage or Transition was installed at the cross streets in December 2005 to mark the 24th anniversary of when martial law was introduced in Poland (December 13, 1981). It was a time when many ordinary civilians were killed and went missing, which is reflected by the descending pedestrians who disappear into the Earth. The imposing method of military ruling was lifted in 1983, as echoed by the rise of the ordinary man on the opposite side of the street. The installation provides a visual representation of time and power.

Despite the serious subject pertaining to Polish history, Flickr user memnativ caught the statues looking rather jovial with the addition of a few colorful bow ties, presumably added by someone other than Kalina.

This iconic and evocative landmark offers magnificent views of the Somerset Levels, Dorset, Wiltshire and Wales. Steeped in history and legend, excavations at the top of the Tor have revealed the plans of two superimposed churches of St Michael, of which only a 15th-century tower remains. Glastonbury Tor also has a grisly past. Abbot Richard Whiting was executed here in 1549 on the orders of Thomas Cromwell, the first Earl of Essex. Glastonbury Tor is known as being one of the most spiritual sites in the country. Its pagan beliefs are still very much celebrated. It’s a beautiful place to walk, unwind and relax.

Yang, whose dream is to be an Olympic champion weightlifter, first displayed his prowess for power aged just nine months – by lifting a 5kg oil drum into the air.
